Charismatic performer and multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk was born in Columbus, Ohio on Aug. 8, 1936.
Blinded shortly after he was born, Kirk went on to learn to play more than 40 instruments, including the tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch, flute, nose flute and clarinet. Kirk suffered a stroke in 1975 yet continued to perform and tour despite being limited to playing with one hand. He died on Dec. 5, 1977, after a performance in Bloomington, Ind.
