Coronado is a resort and residential community almost entirely surrounded by water. A narrow strip of land, the "Silver Strand," runs south from Coronado to connect it with the mainland at Imperial Beach, near the Mexican border. On the east of the Silver Strand lies San Diego Bay; to the west lies the Pacific Ocean. In addition, a bridge across San Diego Bay connects Coronado with San Diego.
Many residents are either active or retired Navy personnel, often associated with the adjacent North Island Naval Air Station. According to the 2000 census for the Coronado ZIP code, 92118, its population is 24,085.
