Widely known as Rivaldo, Rivaldo Vitor Borba Ferreira was born April 19, 1972 in Recife, Brazil. In 1991 he signed professional terms for Santa Cruz de Recife, which enabled him to give financial help to his mother and four brothers. The same year he was transferred to Mogi-Mirim, which was his first big team and where he stayed for just under a year and a half. A short time afterwards, in 1992, he was signed by Corinthians and then won his first cap for the Brazilian national side, the 'Canarinha' (Little Canary). Later he played for Palmeiras for a couple of seasons, scoring 58 goals. In 1994 he won the Brazilian Championship and in 1996 The Sao Paolo State Championship. He was also named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1999.
